Arrival in Rome!
Part of the delegation of friars headed to the 8th Centenary celebration of the founding of the Franciscan movement from the Immaculate Conception Province of the Franciscans, TOR, arrived in Rome this morning at 8:30 am. After proceeding through passport and customs contral stations at mach speed (relative to the US system), myself, Tello Vu, David Kaczmarek, and Robert Juroszek then proceeded to Sts. Cosmas and Damian (an ancient Basilica dating from the 1st century) and were greeted warmly by Br. Mark McBride and the rest of the friars (Amando, Bernard, John, and our Father General, Michael Higgins). Br. Mark took us on a marvelous tour of the upper and lower church. When I found out that the lower church dates from 77 a.d., I had to bend down to touch the ancient stone that would have supported the footsteps of some of the earliest Church Fathers and Mothers - it was truly awe-inspiring and beyond words. At the moment the street right in front of Sts. Cosmas and Damian is closed in honor of ¨little Easter¨, a day after Easter celebration. There are many persons walking the street, festive music playing, and a great deal of energy! After not having slept for well over 24 hours, it´s this energy and buzz that is keeping us going (along with the offer of dinner out with the friars). Our visit is off to a great start! Stay posted for more entries and hopefully some pics! Pat, TOR

Fr. David Kaczmarek, T.O.R., - Doing Us Proud!
Congratulations to Fr. David Kaczmarek, T.O.R., for his recently published article entitled, "The Interior Nakedness of Francis." The article was published in The Cord, a Franciscan spiritual journal. Fr. David joins the company of Fr. Patrick Quinn and Fr. Giles Schinelli (and others?) of our community who have also been published in this periodical. Interestingly enough, I find the closing paragraph of Fr. David's article to be a very appropriate approach to the Paschal Mystery we are preparing to celebrate in the upcoming Triduum and Easter Vigil: "We struggle to follow humbly the life of Christ through the example of Francis, Clare and all of our Franciscan forebears, voluntarily becoming naked and vulnerable in our contemporary world, a world that for lack of love, cannot understand our gesture any more than those who witnessed the gesture of Francis. There is great mystery in it. Mystery cannot be understood, but only surrendered to." May all of us more fully surrender ourselves during this Holy Week to the one who first surrendered himself to us. Pat, TOR

Next Community Garden Meeting on MAY 2nd!
I received an email From Fr. William that it might be a little difficult to arrange the next community garden meeting on March 2nd considering it was over a month ago! Thanks Fr. William for pointing out this out! The next community garden meeting is scheduled for Saturday, MAY 2nd, at 10 am at St. Bernardine's. The nature of the meeting isn't so much an informational session on our proposal to start a care for creation ministry and community garden as it will be geared toward actually planning the "pilot project" of having a 60x60 garden plot and care for creation programming this summer. As of now we do have a fair number of persons (around 14-17) who have volunteered to help with this pilot project but are looking for some more persons to help with the gardening aspect. Friars, if you know of anyone in the Altoona, Hollidaysburg, or Johnstown area who might enjoy a weekly box of organic produce in exchange for their time, energy, and effort (perhaps as little as six hours per month), please encourage them to attend the meeting in MAY. Peace, good, and a blessed Holy Week to all! Pat, TOR

First Educational Outreach to Local Community on Community Garden and Care for Creation Initiative
Yesterday Bill Linhares, John Kerr, and myself met with 35 persons at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Altoona, PA, to begin creating a vision for a possible community supported garden and care for creation center at our property in St. Bernardine's, PA. The meeting was attended by a nice mix of persons: old and young, master gardners and novices, and those with a great interest in the spiritual dimension of the proposal along with those who were more focused on the organic gardning aspect. All in all it was a good first step toward starting a "pilot project" community supported garden and care for creation center for this coming summer. A number of persons volunteered to help with such a garden this summer. We determined that we would need some additional persons in order to have the number of volunteers needed to work the garden without overburdening any one person or persons. In order to "recruit" more volunteers, those who attended the meeting were encouraged to spread our vision to others in the community and urge them to attend a planning meeting to be held on March 2nd at St. Bernardine's. May God continue to bless this initiative with interest, enthusiasm, and many more persons to share in the growing vision! Pat, TOR

Meeting with Representative Jerry Stern regarding CSA and Care for Creation Initiative
This morning Fr. Christopher Panagoplos, Br. John Kerr, Master Gardener Pat Trimble, and myself met with State Representative Jerry Stern and his legislative aid, Julie Nelson, regarding our community's proposal to launch a community garden and care for creation "pilot project" this summer. The meeting was arranged by Tim Beresnyak, our new Development Director. Representative Stern is the State Representative for the 80th district of Blair County and expressed interest in finding out more information about our proposal. The meeting began by discussing our respective concerns regarding the environment. Rep. Stern talked about the steps he has taken to care for the natural heritage of Blair County. The environmental areas that he has focused on in particular are conservation, watershed issues, and environmental management. His legislative aid, Julie, has a degree in Environmental Science and shares his concerns for the environment, especially in the area of watershed issues. After hearing about the short term goals of our community's proposal (to move forward with a community supported garden and care for creation program) and the long term goals (to develop up to a 4 acre CSA and Care for Creation Center) he pledged whatever support he could give us. We told him that right now we simply need to "get the word out" about our proposal and any help he could assist us with would be greatly appreciated. Julie said that she would contact some key persons in the area and ask if they would attend our informational session on March 31st @ 7 pm at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Altoona. Julie also said she would attend and remarked that the proposal is a wonderful idea. Depending on how well attended that meeting is, we may look to Rep. Stern and Julie to help us promote another informational session at the end of April or the beginning of May. Rep. Stern mentioned the possibility of having a press conference about the initiative at St. Bernardine's (next to the Blair County Extension Community Garden plot). It appears that there is growing support for our proposal both at the "grass-roots" level and levels higher up! Thanks to Tim for arranging this meeting, to Christopher for hosting and providing hospitality, to Rep. Stern and Julie for taking time out of their busy schedules, to Pat Trimble for her expertise and support, and to our membership for being open to the possibilities that this project holds for our community. Peace! Pat, TOR

It Is Written: On Slumdog Millionaire and Easter Hope
Trip to Wild and Wonderful West Virginia
I recently spent a week at our retreat center (Priest Field) in wild and wonderful West Virginia for the purposes of giving a talk on care for creation to students from the Shepherd University Campus Ministry, hosting a meeting on our proposal to develop a CCC (Care for Creation Center) and CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), and co-hosting a discernment day of reflection with the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston and the Benedictines of St. Vincent in Latrobe. The talk with the Shepherd University students seems to have gone well and I hope to spend time with them in the future. The meeting on the CCC/CSA proposal also went well and we were able to develop a contact list of persons in the area around our St. Bernardine's Monastery in Newry, PA, who might be interested in participating in a community garden this summer. Finally, the discernment day of reflection, though only attended by three persons, was time well spent and will hopefully lay the groundwork for future discernment days of reflection and retreats at Priest Field. Many thanks to the gracious staff of Priest Field and Fr. Bill for the great hospitality. Pat, TOR
